Green Voted VaSID State Coach of the Year

After overseeing the second greatest single-season turnaround in Liberty women's basketball history, Carey Green has been voted the 2017-18 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Women's Basketball Coach of the Year for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Meanwhile, 2017 VaSID Rookie of the Year Keyen Green was voted to the second team all-state roster. George Mason Patriots captured both the Player of the Year (Natalie Butler) and Rookie of the Year (Nicole Cardano-Hillary) honors.

Carey Green is now a five-time VaSID Coach of the Year, after previously winning the honor in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2013. After the Lady Flames went 13-17 in 2016-17, Green coached this year's team to a 24-10 record, the Big South regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Liberty's 11-win improvement from 2016-17 to 2017-18 was tied for the fifth biggest win increase among NCAA Division I women's basketball teams over the last two seasons.

Green, who just wrapped up his 19th season as Liberty's head coach, has led the Lady Flames to 14 Big South regular-season titles, 14 Big South Championship titles, 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and 16 20-win seasons.

Green's career record of 440-168 gives him a winning percentage of .724, ranking 16th among active NCAA Division I women's basketball head coaches, ahead of North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchell and South Carolina's Dawn Staley, among others.

Keyen Green becomes the first Lady Flame selected to a VaSID all-state squad since the 2014-15 season, when Ashley Rininger was a second team honoree. Green was previously recognized as Big South Player of the Year, while earning berths on the first team All-Big South and second team All-ECAC rosters.

Green led the Lady Flames in both scoring (12.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg), while ranking 11th nationally for field goal percentage (.610). The sophomore post player from Philadelphia already ranks 28th in program history for scoring (784 career points) and is tied for 36th in rebounding (442 career rebounds).
