Golf Finishes Mason Rudolph Championship in 3rd Place

No. 46 Liberty wrapped up its regular season schedule with a third-place showing at the 2018 Mason Rudolph Championship, edging out No. 6 Florida for its third top-three finish in as many events.

The Flames did enter the final round holding a narrow lead over the top three teams in the SEC, but could not keep up with the torrid pace of play set by tournament host and No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 7 Alabama on Sunday.

Liberty finished the event with a 9-over par 861 (291-279-291), which was eight shots off the winning pace of Vanderbilt. The Commodores won their own event for the third time in the last four years, carding a 6-under par 278 during the final round to finish with a winning score of 1-over par 853 (288-287-278).

Alabama, last year's victor following three rounds at the Vanderbilt Legends Club – South Course (par 71, 7,100 yards), took home runner-up honors after ending the tournament with a 4-over par 856 (291-281-284).

The Flames finished six shots clear of No. 6 Florida, who took home fourth place with a 15-over par 867 (291-288-288).

No. 47 Louisville (301-284-294), the last top-50 ranked team in the field, and East Tennessee State (293-299-291) shared fifth place with a 31-over par 883.

John Augenstein played a large part in Vanderbilt's come-from-behind win, as he carded a 4-under par 67 on Sunday and finished five shots clear of the field with an overall 7-under par 206 (70-69-67).

Liberty's Ervin Chang finished tied for fourth place with an even par 213 (73-68-72). The sophomore led the 82-man field in par-3 scoring (2-under par average/2.87) and paced Liberty during the tournament with 11 birdies.

Mickey DeMorat followed with his third top-10 finishes of his senior year, posting a 3-over par 216 (74-69-73) to finish in ninth place.

Isaiah Logue tied for 10th place with a 4-over par 217 (72-73-72), his 17th career top-10 finish thanks to finishing tied for third in the field in par-4 scoring (2-over par average/4.07).

Gabe Lench and Alexandre Fuchs rounded out Liberty's players at the event. Lench finished tied for 23rd place with an 8-over par 221 (72-75-74) and Fuchs shared 35th place with a 12-over par 225 (80-69-76).

The Flames will have a short turnaround time for their most important event of the season when Liberty travels to Ninety Six, S.C., for the 2018 Big South Men's Golf Championship.

The Flames will be the No. 1 seed in the three-day event that gets underway on Friday at The Patriot Golf Club, home of Liberty's conference titles in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
