No. 4 seed Liberty (12-11) will begin its quest for a Big South title against No. 5 seed Longwood (12-8) on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C.

Liberty men's tennis posted a 4-3 mark in its Big South regular-season matches in receiving the No. 4 seed, while Longwood went 3-4 to get the No. 5 seed.

The three-day 2018 Big South Men's Tennis Championship will feature quarterfinal matches on Monday and semifinal bouts on Tuesday, wrapping up with the title match on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The winner of the Liberty-Longwood match on Monday will move on to face either top-seeded Winthrop or eighth-seeded Radford in the semifinals on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The championship match will be contested on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Liberty is seeking its first Big South title in program history. Series History vs. Longwood/History in BSC Championship
Liberty defeated Longwood, 5-2, on Feb. 28 in the two teams' regular-season meeting. In that match, Liberty won the doubles point and received singles victories from Eddie Gutierrez (No. 2), Chase Burton (No. 3), Alex Poynter (No. 5) and Diego Castano (No. 6).

The Flames are 19-5 all-time against the Lancers. Liberty is 7-27 all-time in Big South Men's Tennis Championship matches and is in search of the program's first Big South crown.

 

Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty went a combined 23-19 in Big South singles and 11-8 in conference doubles matches. Sophomore Chase Burton led the way in singles with a 6-1 mark and also enters the championship riding a six-match winning streak. Burton and his doubles partner, senior Sam Matheson, paced the Flames' doubles efforts at 6-1 in the Big South.
  • The Flames got off to a 4-0 start in Big South Conference competition in 2018, the best start in program history in head coach Derek Schwandt's first year. During that stretch, they bested Longwood (5-2 on Feb. 28), Gardner-Webb (4-3 on March 9), UNC Asheville (6-1 on March 10) and Radford (5-2 on March 24).
  • Junior Eddie Gutierrez was named Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Week back on Feb. 14.
  • Burton, Gutierrez and senior Diego Castano each have 22 singles wins on the season. Castano is a Big South-best 14-4 (.778) in the No. 6 slot.
  • Castano and Poynter (17-14) both have 17 doubles wins during the 2017-18 season. They have played every single doubles match together in both fall and spring competition.

 

Scouting Longwood
Longwood's No. 1 singles player, sophomore Amadeo Blasco, is 15-5 overall and 14-4 at No. 1 singles in the spring. Meanwhile, Julian Farthing is 17-1 in the No. 4 slot and has won 11 straight singles contests. Blasco and Raisei Sakai comprise the Lancers' best doubles duo (8-6) in the spring for first-year head coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez.
