Liberty held Gardner-Webb to just two hits in Saturday's series finale, earning a series sweep with an 8-0 victory in five innings at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.
With the win, its second straight shutout victory on Saturday, Liberty (28-8) improves to 9-0 in conference play for the first time in program history. The Lady Flames have won seven straight games overall and have tied a program record with nine straight Big South victories. Gardner-Webb falls to 20-17, 4-5 in Big South games.
Gardner-Webb entered the weekend leading the Big South with a .314 team batting average, but Liberty outhit them, .400 to .183, while outscoring them, 19-3, in the series.
In Saturday's second game, Chase Cassady (5-2) tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout, striking out nine batters in five innings. It was her second shutout of the season and sixth for her career.
Ashley Wark falls to 12-10 with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits, walking one in one innings pitched. Madi Lewis and Laken Myers combined to give up three runs, two earned on three hits in three innings pitched.
Liberty's Amber Bishop went 3-for-3 with a double, homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Autumn Bishop batted 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, extending her hitting streak to 17 games while also hitting her Big South-leading 17th double of the season. Five additional Lady Flames registered hits, with Madison Via driving in two runs.
Katie Stettler and Katie Prebble had one hit apiece for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Lady Flames scored once in the bottom of the first inning and threatened for more. Autumn Bishop and Amber Bishop hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. Alexia Taylor hit into a fielder's choice, and the relay throw got away from first baseman Prebble, allowing Autumn Bishop to score. Liberty then loaded the bases, as Sarah Robertson singled and Jaclyn Amader walked. Two grounders produced the last two outs as Liberty stranded three.
Liberty scored six runs on six hits in the second inning. Autumn Bishop made it 3-0 with a two-run double to left center, and she scored on an RBI double by Amber Bishop. Lewis then entered the circle in relief of Wark. And error and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for Amader, whose RBI single pushed the lead to 5-0. With one out, Via lined a single up the middle, plating two runs. Myers came on to get the final two outs of the inning.
Cassady cruised through the first eight batters she faced, before hitting Weslyn Almond with two outs in the third. She then fanned Booth for the third out.
Amber Bishop's team-leading fifth home run of the season boosted Liberty's advantage to 8-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
Stettler broke up Cassady's no-hit bid in the fourth, and Prebble followed with a single. Facing a two-on, nobody-out situation, Cassady struck out the next three batters.
Cassady finished off the five-inning shutout with a 1-2-3 fifth inning, and the Lady Flames celebrated an 8-0 win and series sweep.
Liberty closes out its four-game homestand on Wednesday, hosting NC State for a single game beginning at 5 p.m. at Liberty Softball Stadium.
