Liberty's Joshua Boateng
After being selected the 2007 Big South Tournament MVP Sunday, Liberty Flames' midfielder Joshua Boateng has added two more honors early this week for his play this past weekend. The junior midfielder has been named to the College Soccer News National and the Soccer America Men's Teams of the Week for games played Nov. 12-18.
Boateng, a native of Accra, Ghana, was at the heart of the Liberty attack this past weekend, helping the Flames capture the Big South Championship for the first time in the history of the program. The midfielder had an assist in Liberty's 2-1 win over UNC Ashville in the first round of the Big South Championship on Thursday. Friday, his goal in the second overtime period gave the Flames a 1-0 victory over Winthrop, and allowed Liberty to advance to the Big South finals. In the championship game, Boateng added an assist in the Flames 2-1 win over Radford to claim the Big South Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's College Cup. After the game, the midfielder was named the tournament's MVP. With its three victories, Liberty is now 13-4-2 on the year. The 13 victories are the most by a Flames team since 1999. Boateng has tallied five goals and five assists for 15 points on the season. He was selected to the Big South all-conference team for the second-straight year last week. Boateng and the Flames will travel to Baltimore, Md., Saturday to square off with Loyola in their first-ever NCAA Men's Soccer Championship appearance.
