Burton and the Flames topped Point Loma Nazarene, 5-2, on Saturday.
Liberty men's tennis collected its 10th win of the season, defeating the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the PLNU Tennis Courts.
Liberty has now won three of its last four matches and improves to 10-8 on the season. The Sea Lions fall to 7-5 with the loss.
"It was another strong team effort today. We need to continue focus on building character and responding to adversity," stated Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt.
The Flames won the doubles point and four of the six singles matches (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6). Liberty's duo of Alex Poynter and Diego Castano topped the Sea Lions' Brendon Millington and Jack Alston, 8-3, in the No. 1 doubles match to start the day. The Flames' Sam Matheson and Chase Burton clinched the doubles point with their 8-3 triumph over CJ Erion and Grant Alston, 8-3.
Thomas Dafcik and Yui Okamoto (PLNU No. 2 doubles) edged Vince Salas and Eddie Gutierrez (Liberty No. 2 doubles), 8-7, to close out doubles.
Liberty's Burton got his second win of the day over Erion, defeated him in singles on court three, 6-3, 6-4. Burton's 17th singles victory of his sophomore season provided the visiting Flames a 2-0 edge.
The Flames' Gutierrez rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Millington. His win on Saturday was his team-best 20th of the year in singles and bumped the Liberty lead up to 3-0.
The Sea Lions' first point of the day came from Okamato over the Flames' Salas in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Jack Alston of Point Loma Nazarene trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with his 7-6, 6-4 decision against Poynter of Liberty.
Liberty's Castano provided the Flames their fourth point of the day, overcoming a one-set deficit in the process. He lost the first set, 7-5, but rebounded to win the next two sets and the match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
With the win, his 19th of the season in singles, the senior improved to 11-3 in the No. 6 slot in the lineup during the spring. His victory made it 4-2, Liberty.
The Flames' Matheson and Point Loma Nazarene's Dafcik went to three sets as well. Matheson won a third-set 10-point tiebreaker, taking the match, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6). The Tauranga, New Zealand, native now has 10 No. 1 singles victories, this spring.
The Flames will remain in San Diego to train and prepare for their next match, a bout against the San Diego State Aztecs on Wednesday. First serve between the Flames and Aztecs (2-12) will be at 9 p.m. (Eastern).
