Mike Gelatt was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American first team member, Monday.

Liberty University's Mike Gelatt has been selected to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Men's Soccer Academic All-America University Division first team for his excellence in the classroom and on the soccer field.

Gelatt becomes the 12th Liberty student-athlete to be named to a NCAA Division I CoSIDA Academic All-America team and the fourth student-athlete to be selected to a first team. He joins Liberty track student-athlete Danielle McNaney (2005), track and cross country student-athlete Heather Sagan (2002) and football student-athlete Jarrod Everson (1998), as Liberty's all-time first members.

Gelatt, a defender, and his Flames teammates captured the Liberty men's soccer program's first-ever Big South Championship yesterday with a 2-1 victory over Radford. With the victory, the Flames receive the conference's automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
The senior defender has started all 19 Liberty contests this season. The Indianapolis, Ind., native has been a key member of the Flames' defense, which posted a Big South-leading nine shutouts this season, helping Liberty to a 13-4-2 overall record.

The Flames' 13 wins are the most by a Liberty men's soccer squad since the 1999 team posted a 14-2-1 mark. The victory total is tied for third all-time in program history, behind the 1999 and 1985 teams, who each won 14 contests.

This season, Liberty has yielded just 1.05 goals per game. Liberty entered the week ranked No. 26 nationally with a 0.47 shutout percentage.

Off the field, the senior has excelled in the classroom, currently maintaining a 3.82 GPA. He has been a Dean's List member each of his six semesters at Liberty, and earned a 4.0 GPA in the 2006 Spring, 2005 Fall and 2004 Fall semesters. In addition, the defender has earned academic recognition by being named to the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll the past three academic years.

Gelatt and the rest of the Big South Champion Flames will find out their opponent for the first round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament, when the tournament's bracket is announced, today between 5:30 and 6 p.m. on ESPNews.
