Soares won twice in singles on Saturday against North Carolina A&T and UNCG.
Liberty women's tennis completed a 2-0 Saturday with a 7-0 sweep of the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Saturday at Crosswhite Athletic Club.
Liberty has now won six of its last eight matches and improves to 6-5 overall, while NC A&T moves to 0-8 with the setback. Saturday's 7-0 victory is the Lady Flames' third of 2018. They defeated both Troy and Shaw by the count of 7-0 on Feb. 11 at Crosswhite Athletic Club. Liberty is 5-1 in its three doubleheaders this spring.
The host Lady Flames dominated from start to finish, winning 90 total games between doubles and singles while only losing 12. Liberty won each of the three doubles matches and all six singles contests in straight sets.
"Doubleheader days require a lot of stamina and mental focus. I think our girls did a great job of excelling in these areas today," said Lady Flames head coach Jeff Maren. Fighting hard for hours on end will help us as we endeavor to improve and move towards our season-ending goals."
Liberty juniors Maria Medina and Lara Soares led the charge in singles, as each player won two singles bouts on the day. After playing at No. 2 singles earlier in the day against UNCG, Medina returned to the No. 1 position and won in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) against her competitor, Sheyla Ramirez of NC A&T.
Soares continued her excellent play of late, defeating Khalia Powell in a 6-1, 6-0 decision. The Sobradinho, Brazil, native has now won her last seven singles matches.
The hosts took all three doubles contests at the onset of the match. First, Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko, playing for the first time since last spring, rolled to a 6-0 victory against their opposition, Khalia Powell and Nadia Hilton-Adams, in the No. 2 position.
Maren also tried a new doubles pairing with Polina Miroshnichenko and Ashley Bongart, who faced Sheyla Ramirez and Renata Ruiz in the No. 1 singles match. The Liberty freshman and junior defeated NC A&T's duo, 6-1, giving the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead in the match.
On court three, Evangeline Crist and Audrey Brown completed the sweep of the doubles session with their 6-4 victory against Angelica Martinez and Kanishka Chawla.
Crist was the first Lady Flame to close out her singles bout, taking down Ruiz in two sets (6-1, 6-1) for her 78th career singles victory.
Seconds after Crist's victory, Anderson wrapped up hers. Anderson did not surrender a game to Martinez, winning 6-0, 6-0. Soares (match-clinching point) and Medina's wins upped the score to 5-0, Lady Flames.
After scuffling a bit out of the gate, Miroshnichenko won the final 10 games against her competitor, Hilton-Adams, to claim her No. 4 singles match, 6-3, 6-0.
Finally, Grace Hashiguchi, who started her match as most of the matches were already wrapping up, upended Chawla (6-0, 6-0) in two sets for the 7-0 sweep.
Liberty has now taken 10 of the 11 all-time matches against NC A&T. After a 6-0 day in doubles, the Lady Flames are now 22-7 in doubles during the spring.
Liberty will be back in action on March 11 at No. 12 Wake Forest.
