Amber Bishop hit a double, a home run and drove in four runs against George Washington on Saturday.
Liberty used a four-run fourth to pull away from George Washington on Saturday, defeating the Colonials, 7-3 at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.
The Lady Flames (12-5) move to 2-1 at this weekend's Carolina Classic, while George Washington falls to 9-5 overall. These two teams will meet again tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Amber Bishop went 2-for-4 with a double, homer and four RBI for Liberty, while Autumn Bishop, Sarah Robertson and Tori Zavodny all doubled as well Madison Via batted 2-for-3 for the Lady Flames.
Priscilla Martinez batted 2-for-2 with a double and a RBI for George Washington, while Morgan Rinehart went 2-for-3.
Chase Cassady (4-2) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out four in 5 1/3 innings. Julia DiMartino picked up her third save of the season, giving up one run on one hit, striking two and fanning two in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Sarah Costlow (4-1) drew the loss, giving up five run on five hits, to go with six walks and one strikeout in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Kaitlin Buff tossed 2 1/3 relief innings while allowing two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out one.
Sidney Bloomfield singled to left with one out in the top of the first, before going to second on a passed ball and to third on a groundout. Cassady then fanned Alessandra Ponce for the third out.
Autumn Bishop led off Liberty's half of the first with a double to right center. Zavodny later lined a one-out double to the gap in right center, plating Bishop for the first run in the game.
Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases for the Colonials with one out in the top of the second. Cassady got out of the jam with a fielder's choice and a strikeout.
With one out in the second, Deidra See walked and Via bunted for a base hit. A groundout sent the runners ahead one base. Costlow walked Autumn Bishop to fill the bases, before Amber Bishop smashed a liner to Costlow, who fired to first to end the inning.
Liberty staged a one-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. See drew a walk and Madison Via followed with a single. Alexia Taylor then walked, loading the bases. Autumn Bishop drew a bases-loaded walk, and Amber Bishop lined a two-run double to center for a 4-0 advantage. A wild pitch scored Autumn Bishop from third, making it 5-0, Liberty. Buff then came on in relief of Costlow, striking out Jaclyn Amader for the final out.
George Washington threatened in the fifth inning, putting runners on the corners with a pair of singles. Amber Bishop made a catch in the outfield on a flare by Elena Shelepak to get out of the jam.
Martinez hit a leadoff single in the sixth. Cone's opposite-field, pinch-hit double put runners on second and third with nobody out. Rochelle Draper got GWU on the board with an RBI double, narrowing the gap to 5-1. DiMartino then entered the circle for Cassady. A passed ball allowed pinch runner Sierra Lange to score, but DiMartino retired the next two batters on groundouts.
The Lady Flames answered in the bottom of the sixth. Jasmeen Click drew a leadoff walk, going to second on a groundout before stealing third. Amber Bishop lined a two-run homer to left center for a 7-2 advantage.
DiMartino completed the save, allowing one run in the seventh. Shelepak walked with two outs, before Martinez doubled to right center to draw the Colonials to within 7-3. After walking Lange, DiMartino retired the last two batters to seal the win.
Liberty will close out its time at the Carolina Classic tomorrow, with a 10 a.m. game against George Washington followed by a 12:30 p.m. contest versus Marshall.
