Madison Via went 2-for-3 with her first career home run, Friday against Marshall.

Liberty scored four times during the top of the third inning, getting a three-run homer from Madison Via as the Lady Flames downed Marshall, 6-1, at Carolina Softball Stadium.

The Lady Flames improve to 11-4 on the season with the win to begin the Carolina Classic. Marshall falls to 8-9 after splitting two games today. The Thundering Herd had defeated George Washington, 2-0, earlier today.

Julia DiMartino (7-3) earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits, striking out four and walking three.

Kailee Williamson (3-3) drew the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, in 2 1/3 innings. Ali Burdette gave up one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief.

Via went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI, while Amber Bishop batted 2-for-4 with a double. Taylor Hoffman batted 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Sarah Robertson hit 2-for-3 with a homer and one RBI.

Seven different Marshall batters recorded one hit each, as Aly Harrell and Madi Marshall both doubled.

Hoffman reached on an infield hit with one out in the second. A groundout sent Hoffman to second, and Kaitlin McFarland lifted a flare to right that was dropped by second baseman Elicia D'Orazio, allowing Hoffman to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead. Autumn Bishop then drew a walk to load the bases before Amber Bishop grounded out for the third out.

Back-to-back walks gave Marshall life in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Flames got out of the jam, turning an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Tori Zavodny singled to start the third, and Williamson then hit Jaclyn Amader with a pitch. Robertson sacrificed both runners over a base. Hoffman then bunted, reaching base as Zavodny evaded a rundown to score from third. Via then cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left center, making it 5-0. Burdette came on in relief of Williamson, striking out the final two batters.

Marshall attempted a rally with two outs in the third, as Eloise Tribolet walked and Taylor McCord singled. DiMartino retired Harrell on a flyout for the third out.

The Herd got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Grayson Radcliffe singled to center with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. After two outs, Marshall's RBI double trimmed the deficit to 5-1. Jordan Colliflower bunted for a base hit, before an Elicia D'Orazio flyout ended the inning.

After one out in the fifth, Hoffman singled to center and stole second. Via then drew a walk, but Burdette retired the next two batters.

The Herd rallied with two outs in the fifth. Harrell doubled the left center, before Briana Daiss reached on an error. Daiss took second on a passed ball, but DiMartino fanned Radcliffe to strand the runners and keep the score 5-1.

Amber Bishop lined a one-out double to left center in the top of the sixth inning, but Burdette retired the next two batters to keep Liberty off the board.

Following a 1-2-3 Marshall sixth, Robertson launched a solo homer to left to start the seventh, boosting the Liberty advantage to 6-1.

Elicia D'Orazio singled to left as the first batter in the bottom of the seventh inning. She went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. However, DiMartino capped off the win by getting Harrell to ground out to second base.
