Liberty Upends Longwood, 5-2, in Big South Opener, Wednesday Afternoon

Liberty got off to a strong start in its 2018 Big South schedule, defeating Longwood, 5-2, at the Lancer Courts on Wednesday.

Liberty improves to .500 (6-6) on the season and 1-0 in the Big South. Longwood is now 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference after the setback.

"It was a great team effort today in nasty conditions. I'm really happy with how we responded to the challenge," stated Flames head coach Derek Schwandt.

The Flames continued their strong doubles play by taking the doubles point to start the finish. On court one, Liberty's duo of Alex Poynter and Diego Castano edged the Lancers' Jorge Godoy and Valentin Popescu, 6-4.

In the No. 2 bout, Longwood's Amadeo Blasco and Julian Farthing handed Liberty's Eddie Gutierrez and Vince Salas their first doubles loss of the spring, 6-4.

The final doubles battle between Chase Burton and Sam Matheson (Liberty) and Raisei Sakai and Daniel Hernandez (Longwood) went to the Flames' duo, 6-4. The Liberty tandem's win made it 1-0 in the match.

Farthing of Longwood picked up his second win of the day, defeating Salas in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) to knot the match at 1-1. Liberty's Poynter (No. 5 singles) answered Farthing's victory with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) triumph over his opponent, Hernandez. The Flames' Burton brought the visitors within a point of their first Big South win of the spring, 3-1, with his 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Sakai on court number three.

Liberty's Gutierrez enabled the Flames to win the match and bring the score to 4-1, Flames, with his three-set victory against his counterpart, Popescu, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, in the No. 2 singles bout.

The Lancers' Blasco knocked off Matheson in three sets (3-6, 7-5, 6-3) on court one. The final match to conclude was between Castano and Godoy. The Liberty senior improved to 6-3 in the No. 6 position by winning, 7-6, 6-3.     

The Flames will be back on the courts for a home match on Friday against the George Mason Patriots (2-5). Friday's bout between the Flames and the Patriots will begin at noon in Lynchburg.
