Liberty backed a Julia DiMartino one-hitter with timely hitting, downing Delaware State, 6-0, on Friday at Liberty Softball Stadium.
The Lady Flames improve their record to 7-1 on the season, including 2-1 in this week's Liberty Softball Challenge. Delaware State fell to 0-4 on the campaign after going winless in Lynchburg.
Liberty outhit the Hornets, 11-1, while pitching its fourth shutout of the season.
DiMartino (3-1) tossed a complete-game one-hitter, her third shutout of the year and 17th of her career. She struck out a season-high 11 batters and walked two.
Delaware State's Jessia Shalongo (0-1) drew the loss, allowing five runs on six hits, walking three in two innings. Alexis Goldsby pitched the final five innings, giving up one run on five hits.
Tori Zavodny went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one stolen base for Liberty. Sarah Robertson batted 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Amber Bishop hit a two-run double. Eight out of Liberty's nine batters recorded base hits. Alexia Taylor tied a program record with her eighth career sacrifice fly.
Sabrina Quarles registered DSU's lone hit of the game, a bunt single.
Autumn Bishop led off the game with a sharp single to right. Zavodny singled with one out and went to second on the play, putting runners on second and third. Taylor made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Lady Flames continued their offensive barrage in the top of the second. Amader drew a leadoff walk and Hoffman then singled on the infield. Amber Bishop roped a two-run double for a 5-0 advantage. After an infield single by Zavodny, Taylor grounded out and Madison Via flied out.
Robertson drew a leadoff walk in the third. Goldsby came on in relief of Shalongo. McFarland then reached on an error. Three good defensive plays in a row kept the score at 5-0.
DiMartino retired the first eight batters she faced before Quarles' bunt base hit with two outs in the third. She then got Kaleigh Berry on a groundout.
The pitchers settled in through the middle innings, as both Goldsby and DiMartino pitched scoreless softball in the third through sixth frames.
Liberty added to their lead in the top of the seventh. Robertson hit a leadoff single and Kaitlin McFarland drove her in with an opposite-field RBI double. Goldsby got out of the inning, but not before the Lady Flames boosted its advantage to 6-0.
DiMartino closed out the shutout with a pair of strikeouts during a hitless seventh inning.
