The Liberty swimming & diving team begins its quest for a second conference championship, competing at the 2018 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Swimming & Diving Championships, held Wednesday through Saturday at Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.

The Lady Flames won their first CCSA title in 2014, and have finished as conference runner-up five times (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017).

This is the fifth year in a row that the CCSA meet will follow a four-day format. On Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., finals of the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay will be held. Individual events will begin on Thursday morning with preliminary heats at 10 a.m.

How to Follow the Lady Flames
Live results will be available for all events at the 2018 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships. Also, live video streaming will be available, free of charge, through the Big South Network. Fans can receive Twitter updates by following @LibertyFlames and @LUSwimDive.

The CCSA, which also sponsors beach volleyball, is comprised of nine teams for women's swimming & diving and has seven men's swimming & diving teams.

On the women's side, CCSA schools represent the Big South (Campbell, Gardner-Webb, Liberty, UNC Asheville), Atlantic Sun (Florida Gulf Coast, North Florida), MEAC (Howard), Sun Belt (Georgia Southern) and Southland (Incarnate Word). VMI, a charter member of the conference in 2007, left to join America East after a 10-year run in the CCSA.

Florida Gulf Coast claimed the CCSA championship for the third straight time, and eighth in the last nine years, scoring 1.574.5 points in 2017. Liberty scored 1,355 points, posting its fifth second-place finish in the last six years. Based on this season's top times in the CCSA, it appears that FGCU and Liberty should battle it out for first place once again.

Current Lady Flame Morgan Noonan is the lone remaining member of Liberty's swimming & diving roster to win a conference championship, as she was on the CCSA-winning squad in 2014.

The 2017 CCSA Championships saw Liberty register 16 podium finishes, four victories, eight B cuts and four program records.

Eighth-year Head Coach Jake Shellenberger is a two-time CCSA Women's Swimming Coach of the Year, receiving the award in 2012 and 2014. He has posted an 84-30 dual-meet record, leading the Lady Flames since the beginning of the program in the 2010-11 season.

The Lady Flames' current roster features five past CCSA medalists. Prudence Rooker has posted five top-three finishes all-time, including three at the 2017 CCSA Championships. Alicia Finnigan also earned three podium finishes in 2017, giving her four career top-three conference placings. Rachel Hoeve, Brittany Weiss and Hannah Baker have each medaled once, while Weiss (2017 100 back) and Finnigan (2017 200 fly) have both won one conference individual title.

Liberty swimmers have found success against top competition in league meets this season, defeating six 2017 CCSA individual-event champions in dual-meet action. Prudence Rooker won the 100 and 200 breaststroke over FGCU's Sommer Harris in Jan., as Harris claimed both events at the 2017 CCSA Championships. The following Liberty swimmers defeated one 2017 CCSA champion each (Alicia Finnigan over FGCU's Christina Kaas Elmgreen, 100 fly; Hannah Baker over FGCU's Hannah Burdge, 200 free; Payton Keiner over FGCU's Doris Eichhorn, 200 back; Emily Manly over Gardner-Webb's London Schumacher, 400 IM).

Rooker, a five-time CCSA podium finisher, needs three more top-three placings to tie former Lady Flame Brye Ravettine (2011-14) for the most conference medals in program history. She also can join Victoria Tschoke (2014-17) as the second Lady Flame all-time to earn 12 career top-eight CCSA finishes. She holds the conference's top time in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.82) and has been named CCSA Swimmer of the Week twice this season. She finished second at the 2017 CCSA Championships in the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.

Finnigan is the CCSA record holder in the 200 fly, having swum 1:56.15 at the 2017 Bulldog Last Chance Meet. The defending conference 200 fly champion, Finnigan competed in the 2017 NCAA Championships. She later tied for 10th place in the 200-meter butterfly at the Phillips 66 National Championships. Finnigan has earned four career podium finishes.

Brittany Weiss holds the fastest time in the 100 back in the CCSA this season, swimming an NCAA B cut 54.59 at the Frank Elm Invite. The 2017 Most Outstanding Freshman of the CCSA Meet, Weiss won the 100 back last season in program-record 53.42. She also swam a B cut in the 100 fly, 54.15. She has claimed victory in the 100 back eight times this season.

Hoeve had an 11-race winning streak in the 50 free before having it snapped late in the season. She earned her first career CCSA podium finish in 2016, placing third in 22.99. She has swum a 23.30 this season and should be a top contender in the event.

Lindsey Cohee has had a strong freshman campaign, posting four wins in the 200 fly and three in the 100 fly. She has posted Liberty's fastest times in both the 100 fly (55.93) and 200 fly (2:01.31) this year, ranking fifth in program history in the 200 fly and seventh for 100 fly.

Payton Keiner has also been a standout freshman, especially in the 200 backstroke, where she has posted six victories. Her season-best 2:01.50 at the Frank Elm Invitational ranks sixth all-time in program history in the event. She is also ranked fourth all-time in program history in 50 back (25.71), seventh in 100 back (55.54) and eighth in the 1000 freestyle (10:26.52).

A pair of Liberty divers have scored over 200 points in one-meter diving this season. Two-time CCSA Diver of the Week Amy Schools has scored a team-best 216.15 in one-meter, while Jenna Joyal is second on the team with a season-best 206.11. Joyal leads Liberty's divers with a 206.33 score for three-meter diving, followed by Schools (194.40).
