Thanks to record performances at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational, Liberty senior Darrel Jones was named Big South Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week and freshman Naomi Mojica was tabbed Big South Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Jones' honor is his first of the season and the seventh Big South weekly award of his career. Meanwhile, Mojica was recognized for the first time in her young collegiate career.
Jones, a native of Monroe, N.Y., broke his own program record in the men's triple jump on Saturday. His record-breaking leap, which came in round three, measured 50-11.5. Jones placed second in the competition, trailing only Nigerian Olympian Olu Olamigoke.
Jones ranks first on the 2018 Big South men's triple jump performance list by nearly three feet. He is also tied for No. 32 nationally this season. Jones' record-breaking leap qualified him for the 2018 USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 18.
Mojica, who hails from Queretaro, Mexico, tied Mychelle Cumings' Liberty freshman record in the women's shot put with her mark of 51-3 on Saturday. She finished second in the event, being overtaken by South Carolina's Kathleen Young in the final round.
Just two meets into her collegiate career, Mojica ranks No. 2 in program history and No. 3 in Big South history for the women's indoor shot put. She owns the Big South's best shot put mark of 2018 by more than two and a half feet and is tied for No. 42 on the NCAA national list, including fifth among freshmen.
Mojica also boosted her weight throw personal best to 50-9.25 on Friday, climbing into the No. 9 spot on Liberty's all-time top 10 for that event.
The second annual Liberty Elite Invitational is set for Saturday at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. The eight-team competition will begin with the men's weight throw at 9 a.m. Running events will get started at 10 a.m. with the men's 5K.
Men's distance runners Azaria Kirwa, Samuel Proctor and Colin Schultz will race at the Iowa State Classic, Friday and Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
