Chang's Medalist Honors Helps Liberty Finish in 3rd Place

Liberty's Ervin Chang captured medalist honors in a one-hole playoff on Tuesday, helping his team finish the Sea Best Invitational in third place.

The sophomore became the 28th NCAA Division I medalist in program history and the first since Kieran Vincent captured the individual title to start the 2016-17 season at Duke's Rod Myers Invitational, Sept. 10-11, 2016.

Chang (67-67-70) finished the event tied atop the leaderboard with Lipscomb's Eric Ansett (67-68-69) and North Carolina's William Register (65-69-70), with each player carding a 6-under par 204 for the tournament.

The trio returned to the par-4, No. 18 hole (429 yards) where Chang was the only player to record a par during the one-hole playoff to claim the individual victory.

Overall, the Flames battled tougher playing conditions on Tuesday to finish in third place. Liberty carded a 1-under par 839 (277-277-285) on the TPC Sawgrass – Dye's Valley Course (par 70, 6,858 yards), the sister course to the famed TPC Sawgrass – Stadium Course.

The Flames have now opened their spring schedule with six top-five finishes at this same event in the last eight years.

No. 43 USF fired the second-best team score of the final round, allowing the Bulls to move up the leaderboard one spot and claim the team title with a 6-under par 834 (274-279-281).

No. 20 Arkansas allowed the overnight lead to get away from them, falling to second place after carding a 5-under par 835 (282-267-286).

No. 11 LSU finished in fourth place with a 2-over par 842 (283-279-280), followed by No. 28 Tennessee in fifth with a 3-over par 843 (278-280-285). No. 24 North Carolina (281-279-290) and No. 27 North Florida (280-287-283) shared sixth place with a 10-over par 850.

Liberty's Isaiah Logue fired the third-best individual round on Tuesday, allowing the senior to post his ninth career top-five finish. He finished tied for fifth place with a 4-under par 206 (72-66-68) after carding a team-high 12 birdies during the event.

Mickey DeMorat finished tied for 27th place with a 4-over par 214 (69-71-74). The senior led the team and ranked 11th in the 81-man field with 38 pars during the tournament.

Gabe Lench finished tied for 31st place with a 5-over par 215 (69-73-73), while Payton Taylor rounded out Liberty's roster in a share for 44th place with a 9-over par 219 (72-73-74).

The Flames will make their second of three trips to the "Sunshine State" in two weeks when Liberty participates in the SunTrust Gator Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Florida at its home golf course, the Mark Bostick Golf Course, Feb. 17-18, in Gainesville. Fla.
