Soares won her singles bout on Sunday at Texas A&M.
Host Texas A&M topped Liberty, 4-1, on Sunday at The Mitchell Tennis Center.
Liberty's lone win come from No. 4 singles player Lara Soares. The Aggies claimed four singles victories (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5) for the victory in an unique match that did not feature any doubles play.
Texas A&M runs its record to a perfect 5-0 in 2018, while Liberty (0-3) is still in search of its first victory of the spring.
The Aggies' Macarena Olivares defeated the Lady Flames' Anna Dollar, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match, providing the home side an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Texas A&M freshman Riley McQuaid knocked off Liberty junior Rebekah Anderson in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to extend the Aggie lead to 2-0.
The Lady Flames' Soares collected her first victory of the spring campaign with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 performance against Dorthea Faa-Hviding. The Brazil native's win trimmed the gap to 2-1.
Liberty and Texas A&M's remaining matches (No. 1, No. 3, No. 6) were back-and-forth battles, with momentum ultimately swinging to the Aggies.
The No. 3 match between senior Evangeline Crist (Liberty) and senior Eva Paalma (Texas A&M) was tied, 4-4, in the first set, with Crist leading, 40-30. Paalma then won the next two points to take the game and would go on to close out the set, 6-4. Crist led Paalma, 3-0, in set two, but the Aggie senior won six of the last seven games for a straight-sets victory (6-4, 6-4).
With Texas A&M then leading 3-1, the attention turned towards court one's match between Domenica Gonzalez and Maria Medina. Gonzalez claimed set one, 6-3, before Medina evened it at a set apiece with a 6-4 second-set win. In the third set, Gonzalez prevailed, 6-2, taking the match (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) and lifting the Aggies to the 4-1 win.
Liberty freshman Grace Hashiguchi, making the first dual match appearance of her Lady Flames career, won the opening set, 7-5, over Iulia Ivascu and was in a second-set tiebreaker with her opponent before play was halted.
The Lady Flames will play their second match of the day this afternoon against the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (0-2) at The Mitchell Tennis Center.
