Azaria Kirwa improved his 3K personal best to 8:07.04 on Saturday.
Racing against an elite men's 3K field headlined by Olympic silver medalist Paul Chelimo, Liberty junior Azaria Kirwa placed ninth in a personal-best time of 8:07.04, during Saturday's Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track.
Chelimo won the race in 7:52.88, while Kirwa was the fourth-fastest collegiate performer. Kirwa shaved five seconds off of his previous best, punching his IC4A ticket and moving up to No. 22 nationally on this season's NCAA Division I men's 3K list.
Kirwa ranks No. 4 all-time at Liberty and No. 7 all-time in the Big South Conference for the indoor men's 3K distance with Saturday's effort.
Kirwa has now recorded a personal best and IC4A qualifier in each of his first two races this season, following his 4:11.87 mile at the Liberty Kickoff last Saturday.
Up Next Kirwa will head to Ames, Iowa next weekend to race in the Iowa State Classic men's 5K.
Meanwhile, most of his teammates will take part in the second annual Liberty Elite Invitational, Saturday at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
