Jovaine Atkinson (L)/Dasiana Larson (R)
Liberty redshirt sophomore Jovaine Atkinson has been named Big South Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, while senior Dasiana Larson was tabbed Big South Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, thanks to their performances at the season-opening Keydet Invitational.
Atkinson and Larson are now both two-time Big South Athletes of the Week during their respective careers.
A native of Spanish Town, Jamaica, Atkinson got his 2018 season started with a bang, clocking a record-breaking time of 7.75 in the men's 60 hurdles prelims on Friday. He then went on to capture the men's 60 hurdles title on Saturday, running 7.84 in the final.
Atkinson's preliminary time of 7.75 shattered his own Liberty record of 7.94 and tied the Big South standard of UNC Asheville's Milan Ristic from the 2013 season. Atkinson currently ranks No. 7 nationally for the event.
Larson, who hails from Garner, Iowa, placed fourth in both the women's weight throw (60-4) and shot put (45-3), qualifying for the ECAC meet in both events. Her shot put mark established a new indoor personal best and ranks No. 2 in program history.
Larson tops the 2017-18 Big South women's weight throw list and ranks second in the shot put.
Atkinson and Larson will get a chance to compete at home for the first time this season during this weekend's Liberty Kickoff at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. The meet is slated to begin Friday at 12:30 p.m. with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles. Saturday's slate events will get started at 9 a.m. with the men's weight throw.
