As the fall semester wound down, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to interview Liberty Softball Head Coach Dot Richardson.
The Lady Flames, coming off of a record-setting, championship-winning 2017 season, now look toward the 2018 campaign. Last season, Liberty set numerous program records on the way to a 46-24 season that culminated in the program's first postseason championship. Liberty went 16-5 in conference play, earning its fourth Big South regular-season title.
Competing as the No. 1 seed for the Big South Softball Championship, Liberty made it to the winner-take-all final before falling to tournament host Longwood. The Lady Flames then went on a run in the first-ever National Invitational Softball Championship, going 8-2 at the event. At the NISC National Round, Liberty bounced back from an opening-round loss to Weber State, winning five straight elimination games, including three on the final day, to earn the NISC title.
The 2018 spring schedule will provide Liberty softball fans with plenty of home games, as the Lady Flames have 24 contests scheduled at Liberty Softball Stadium. Liberty will play two home games against 2017 Women's College World Series participant Baylor, along with single home contests versus ACC foes NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. The season opens on Feb. 9, as Liberty takes on Toledo to kick off the Dot Richardson Invitational in Clermont, Fla.
