The contest will serve as the classic's unofficial championship game after both teams were victorious on Tuesday. • Liberty is seeking its first 2-0 showing in a regular-season tournament since defeating Penn State and host Georgia State to win the GSU Thanksgiving Tournament title, Nov. 28 & 30, 2014 in Atlanta, Ga. • The Lady Flames are now 4-1 in their last five outings, following their largest comeback win of the season. Liberty trailed Denver by 10 points before rallying. • Wednesday's matinee will feature the Big Sky Conference preseason favorite (Northern Colorado) and the Big South Conference preseason second-place pick (Liberty). • Liberty was led by the outside-inside duo of Ashtyn Baker and Keyen Green on Tuesday. Baker scored 12 of her career-high 20 points in the decisive fourth quarter, while Green posted her first double-double of 2017-18 (18 points, 10 rebounds). Series History vs. Northern Colorado First Meeting Notable: • Northern Colorado is the Lady Flames' sixth first-time opponent of the 2017-18 season to date, following Michigan, Drake, Limestone, Shippensburg and Denver. • Northern Colorado is Liberty's second opponent from Colorado in program history, following Tuesday's matchup with Denver. The Bears' only previous matchup with a Virginia opponent was a Jan. 3, 1979 home loss to James Madison. • Liberty has never faced a Big Sky opponent and Northern Colorado has never played a Big South team.
Notes and Anecdotes - Liberty vs. Northern Colorado • Northern Colorado went 22-8 last season and is off to a 7-3 start in 2017-18, highlighted by wins over DePaul and LSU. • Northern Colorado junior guard Kirsten Kramer and Liberty sophomore guard Ria Gulley (who is redshirting the 2017-18 season) were teammates at Clark High School in San Antonio, Texas. • Northern Colorado's roster features two New Zealand natives, Tiarna Clarke and Krystal Legler-Walker. Liberty will add New Zealander Amy West to its roster in January 2018. • Northern Colorado Head Coach Kamie Ethridge was a two-time All-American at Texas, MVP of the 1986 NCAA national title game and helped Team USA win gold at the 1988 Summer Olympics. • One of Liberty's biggest wins in program history came at No. 19/17 Kansas State on Dec. 4, 2004. Ethridge was Kansas State's associate head coach at the time, while current Northern Colorado assistant Laurie Koehn played for the Wildcats in that game. • Northern Colorado assistant Katie Shepard was a sophomore at Sacred Heart during the 2012-13 season. Her team played Preseason WNIT consolation games against Sam Houston State and Liberty at the Vines Center, but she did not appear in either contest. On This Date • Liberty is 4-7 all-time on Dec. 20. • The Lady Flames lost 80-64 at UTSA on Dec. 20 a year ago. • Liberty's last Dec. 20 win was a 76-63 victory at VCU in 2012. The Lady Flames also picked up a 75-51 win over UNLV in the Bahamas on Dec. 20, 1999 during Carey Green's first year as head coach. • Liberty is 107-126 all-time in December, including 62-56 under Carey Green and 3-1 in 2017-18.
