2017 Men's Tennis Fall Season Recap

With the fall slate concluded for Liberty men's tennis, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce caught up with Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt.

The Flames competed in four tournaments this fall, including two at the Cook Tennis Center. The program hosted the 22-team ITA Atlantic Regional from Oct. 19-24 on its 18 championship courts.

Liberty begins its spring slate with two matches at Virginia Tech on Jan. 19. The Flames will take on the Hokies at 11 a.m. on that day, followed by a 6 p.m. match against North Carolina A&T.

2017 Fall Season Highlights

  • Junior Eddie Gutierrez and sophomore Vince Salas paced the team in singles victories with 10 apiece. Gutierrez reached two singles finals (Liberty University Invitational, Aztec Fall Invitational), while Salas won eight of his last 10 singles bouts. Other notable singles win totals for the Flames included: sophomore Chase Burton (8), senior Diego Castano (8) and junior Alex Poynter (8).
  • Burton reached the quarterfinals of the singles main draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional. The Naples, Fla., native posted a 4-1 mark which featured victories over players from Morgan State, George Mason, Virginia and Old Dominion.
  • Castano and Poynter captured the White doubles title at the season-opening Liberty University Invitational on Sept. 24. Gutierrez and Salas paced Flames doubles units with six victories during the fall campaign.
  • Collectively, Liberty posted an 8-2 record on Day 2 of the ITA Atlantic Regional (6-1 singles, 2-1 doubles).
  • On Oct. 16, the Flames met professional tennis icons John McEnroe and Michael Chang at Convocation. That evening, the team watched the two tennis legends, alongside fellow legends Andy Roddick and James Blake, compete in the PowerShares Series tournament at the Vines Center.
