With the fall slate wrapped up for Liberty women's tennis, LFSN reporter Alan York had a chance to catch up with Liberty Women's Tennis Head Coach Jeff Maren.

The Lady Flames competed in six tournaments during the fall. Liberty begins its spring match schedule on Jan. 20 at Dartmouth.

2017 Fall Season Highlights

  • Junior Ashley Bongart paced the team with a 9-3 mark in singles, including a 3-0 record at the fall-closing SDSU Fall Classic II. Bongart captured the White singles crown at the event. Other notable singles win totals included: junior Maria Medina (7), senior Evangeline Crist (5), junior Rebekah Anderson (4) and freshman Grace Hashiguchi (4)
  • Anderson and Bongart paced the squad with five doubles victories. The duo, along with Crist and junior Anna Dollar, both reached the quarterfinals at the ITA Atlantic Regional at Virginia Tech. It marked the first time in program history that two Liberty women's tennis doubles duos made the quarterfinals in the regional during the same year.
  • Liberty senior captain Evangeline Crist is closing in on the program records for singles and doubles victories. Crist is second all time in both singles (72) and doubles (79) wins. The Lilburn, Ga., native needs 16 more singles triumphs to surpass Jordan Jenkins (87 wins, 2008-11), while she needs 12 more doubles triumphs to move past Valerie Thong (90 wins, 2013-16).
  • On Oct. 16, the Lady Flames met professional tennis icons John McEnroe and Michael Chang at Convocation. That evening, the team watched the two tennis legends, alongside fellow legends Andy Roddick and James Blake, compete in the PowerShares Series tournament inside the Vines Center.
  • Liberty posted an impressive 19-8 mark in singles play and also captured seven doubles matches at the season-opening South Carolina Invitational (Sept. 15-17). Dollar, Medina and freshman Polina Miroshnichenko each posted 3-0 singles records at the tournament.
