With the fall golf season now complete, Liberty Head Men's Golf Coach Jeff Thomas recently visited with LFSN reporter Alan York to recap the first half of the Flames' 2017-18 season.
The Flames posted a pair of top-five finishes during their five-tournament fall schedule and registered the third-best fall team scoring average in program history (291.13).
Liberty's best finish of the fall season was a runner-up showing at the Shoal Creek Invitational, Sept. 25 and 26. The Flames posted a 2-under par 862 (282-291-289) and were paced by Ervin Chang's 2-under par 214 (71-71-72). The sophomore finished the event tied for ninth place, helping him earn Big South Men's Golfer of the Week honors.
The Flames had two other players receive weekly accolades from the Big South during the fall. Alexandre Fuchs was named Big South Men's Golf Freshman of the Week on Sept. 28 following a sixth-place showing as an individual at the Patriot Intercollegiate where he carded a 1-over par 217 (71-74-72). Mickey DeMorat garnered Big South Men's Golfer of the Week honors after he carded a 6-under par 210 (73-69-68) en route to a runner-up finish at the First American Mortgage Intercollegiate.
DeMorat led the Flames during the fall, posting a 72.40 stroke average, marking the 10th best fall scoring average in program history. The senior posted two top-10 finishes in five events.
The Flames will return to the golf course on Feb. 5-6 for the Sea Best Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Jacksonville at the TPC Sawgrass – Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
