Weiss' 100 Back Victory Highlights Liberty's Day 2 at Rutgers

Liberty sophomore Brittany Weiss won the 100 backstroke on Friday, highlighting the Lady Flames' second day at the Frank Elm Invitational at RU Aquatics Center.

The Lady Flames remain in sixth place entering tomorrow's third and final day of competition, as Liberty has scored 482 points. Navy leads with 1,101.5 points, followed by Rutgers with 989 and Columbia at 897. Northeastern (799.5) and James Madison (522) round out the top five.

Weiss won the 100 backstroke in 54.59, taking .60 seconds off of her qualifying time of 55.19. She beat Columbia's Julia Sampson, who finished second in 54.88. Payton Keiner finished 13th overall with a 56.63 in the B Final. Danielle Booth placed 35th in 59.12, while Rachel Hoeve swam 1:00.98 for 49th, and Siani Null's 1:01.13 was good for 51st.

Lindsey Cohee earned an A Final swim in the 100 fly, clocking 55.96 in prelims before finishing seventh in 56.28 at night. Alicia Finnigan swam 57.01 in the B Final, finishing 13th, while Ashley Mauzy's C Final swim of 57.88 placed her 23rd. Shelby Black took 40th place in 59.10.

Liberty's relays both posted top-eight finishes, beginning with the 200 medley relay, as Keiner, Ricki Lee Hodges, Weiss and Hoeve clocked 1:44.15 for seventh place. That time places ninth on the team's all-time top 10 performers list for the 200 medley relay.

The Lady Flames' 800 free relay of Emily Manly, Finnigan, Elizabeth Magnusson and Colleen Donlin placed eighth in 7:38.89, a time that ranks 10th on the program's top 10 list.

Hodges claimed 13th place in the 100 breaststroke, as her B Final time of 1:04.85 is the fastest by a Lady Flame in the event this season. Hannah Baker turned in a 1:06.56, good for 21st overall, while Morgan Noonan finished 30th in 1:08.45. Kiah Francis swam 1:07.84 in prelims.

Francis earlier took 16th in the 400 IM with a B Final clocking of 4:34.57. Manly came in 20th, swimming 4:33.13 in the C Final. Her 4:33.13 is fifth on the program's top 10 performers list.

Baker led Liberty's 200 freestyle contestants, touching the wall in 1:55.65 for 24th place overall. Ashlee Sall (35th – 1:55.32), Chelsea Pond (37th – 1:55.47), Donlin (53rd – 1:57.74), Magnusson (59th – 1:59.02), Black (60th – 1:59.10) and Corrilynn Lynch (64th – 2:02.75) all swam in qualifying heats.

Jenna Joyal scored 170.70 points in the three-meter springboard, finishing 41st. Amy Schools (159.80), Christine Young (130.55) and Ellen Tart (115.95) took 45th through 47th in that order.

Liberty concludes its participation at the Frank Elm Invite, tomorrow. Day three of the invitational begins at 10 a.m., with 200 backstroke prelims. Tomorrow's finals session starts at 5:30 p.m. with 1650 free finals and ends with the 400 free relay.
