2018 Liberty Softball Schedule A visit to Liberty Softball Stadium by perennial national power Baylor is among the many highlights of Liberty's 2018 softball schedule, released today by fifth-year Head Coach Dot Richardson.
During the 2018 season, Liberty will face 2017 Women's College World Series competitors Baylor and UCLA. The Lady Flames will also take on NCAA Regional Finalists Longwood, North Carolina and South Carolina. In total, Liberty will face seven teams who qualified for the 2017 NCAA Tournament, and two teams (Ohio and Campbell) who made the 2017 National Invitational Softball Championship.
Among Liberty's 2018 opponents, UCLA (No. 5), Baylor (No. 7), Arizona State (No. 23), Marshall (No. 24) and South Carolina (t-No. 25) were all ranked in the final NFCA National Poll of 2017.
Liberty will play 24 home games at the 1,000-seat Liberty Softball Stadium. In addition to the fourth annual Liberty Softball Classic (March 8-11), the Lady Flames will host the first-ever Liberty Softball Challenge, Feb. 16-18. 2017 Women's College World Series participant Baylor will appear in the Liberty Softball Classic. Liberty also welcomes ACC opponents NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech for single games at Liberty Softball Stadium.
The Lady Flames will open the season at the Dot Richardson Invitational in Clermont, Fla., for the third year in a row, Feb. 9-11.
The following weekend, Liberty will host the inaugural Liberty Softball Challenge, facing Delaware State, Feb. 16 to open the home schedule. That tournament also features 2017 MAC regular-season champion Central Michigan and Drexel.
Liberty will then compete in the prestigious Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., Feb. 22-24. It will be the Lady Flames' second year in a row at the event. While in California, Liberty will face 2017 WCWS team UCLA and NCAA Tournament teams North Carolina and Arizona State, among others.
Liberty travels to Columbia, S.C., March 2-4 for a tournament at South Carolina, facing NCAA qualifiers Marshall and South Carolina, along with George Washington.
The Lady Flames' annual Liberty Softball Classic, March 8-11, will include two meetings each against 2017 WCWS participant Baylor and 2017 NISC Regional finalist Ohio, along with a game versus Delaware.
The month of March sees Liberty travel to Virginia (March 14) and North Carolina A&T (March 20) for non-conference games.
Liberty opens Big South play March 17-18 with a home series against Campbell. The Lady Flames will also have home conference series against Gardner-Webb (March 30-31), Charleston Southern (April 20) and Winthrop (May 4-5).
April begins with a visit from NC State on April 4, while Virginia Tech comes to town on April 17. The Lady Flames will play at three-time defending Big South postseason champion Longwood, April 7-8, while also playing at Virginia Tech (April 10), Radford (April 13-14) and Hampton (April 25). All told, Liberty will not leave the Commonwealth of Virginia from March 27 through the Big South Softball Championship, which will be hosted at Radford.
Liberty hosts Virginia on May 1, before finishing out the regular season with a home series against Winthrop, May 4-5.
The top six teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season will compete in the 2018 Big South Softball Championship, hosted by Radford, from May 9-12. The Big South champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, which will begin the weekend of May 18.
