Crist won a three-set match on Friday in San Diego.
The Liberty Lady Flames women's tennis squad captured a pair of singles matches and a doubles bout on day one of the SDSU Fall Classic II, Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Senior Evangeline Crist and junior Ashley Bongart led the charge, picking up victories in their first-round singles matches. The doubles duo of juniors Lara Soares and Maria Medina won their doubles match.
"We still have some work to do in doubles and in closing out matches, but overall, we saw some good things in each of the matches," stated Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "It's encouraging to see progress, and I hope to see continued improvement tomorrow."
Crist's victory, the 71st singles win of her Liberty career, required three sets. The Lilburn, Ga., native fell, 6-3, in the first set to Utah's Victoria Robertson before roaring back to take the final two sets by the same score (6-3) and the match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Crist will face San Diego's Katharina Kukaras in a semifinal match of the Gold singles division on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Bongart captured the first set from Margo Pletcher of Utah, 6-3, and won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). Bongart's first-round 6-3, 7-6 (2) triumph puts her in the semifinals of the White singles flight. She will square off with San Diego's Sophia Chow tomorrow.
In doubles on Friday morning, Soares and Medina took down Cal Poly's Susanne Boyden and Caroline Williams, 6-3. The Liberty tandem will take on host SDSU's pairing of Mia Smith and Jennifer Moinard in a semifinal showdown in the Blue doubles flight on Saturday.
Day two of the SDSU Fall Classic II from the Aztec Tennis Center will begin on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. PST (12 p.m. EST).
