Liberty is currently the 23rd-ranked team in the country.
Following its runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, the Liberty field hockey team checks in at No. 23 in the nation, as released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Tuesday in its Division I Penn Monto/NFHCA national poll.
The Lady Flames finished the season with an 8-11 mark. Liberty posted a 5-2 record in BIG EAST Conference play for a second straight year, earning the No. 2 seed for the 2017 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. Liberty defeated No. 3 seed Old Dominion, 3-1, Friday, before falling to No. 1 seed UConn, 3-0, in Sunday's tournament final.
The Lady Flames finished runner-up in both regular-season and BIG EAST Tournament play for a second straight year. Liberty joined the BIG EAST as an affiliate member in Dec. 2015 and began competition in the conference in 2016.
The 23rd-ranked Lady Flames played the fifth-hardest schedule in the country in 2017. Liberty's opponents this season are a combined 185-112 (.623).
Liberty faced nine ranked opponents in 2017, including the current No. 1 (UConn), No. 2 (Duke), No. 3 (Michigan), No. 4 (North Carolina), No. 7 (Delaware) and No. 9 (Maryland) teams in the nation. Liberty also faced seven of the 18 teams who qualified for the upcoming NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship.
The Lady Flames are currently No. 20 in the NCAA Field Hockey RPI.
This marks the second time this year Liberty has been ranked in the national poll. The Lady Flames opened the year as the 25th-ranked team in the nation on Aug. 22.
