The Lady Flames will compete in two tournaments this weekend.
Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic Draws Hokie Fall Invite Draws
The Liberty Lady Flames women's tennis team continues its fall 2017 schedule with a pair of tournaments, this weekend.
The Lady Flames will compete at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Florida and the Hokie Fall Invite at Virginia Tech.
Juniors Ashley Bongart and Maria Medina will represent Liberty at the three-day Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic at the Lakewood Ranch Athletic Center in Sarasota, Fla. The prestigious tournament is the only collegiate clay court tournament in the country. Tournament action will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.
The strong crop of teams in Florida include: Florida, Oklahoma State, Clemson, Illinois, South Florida, Appalachian State, TCU, Virginia Tech, Liberty, Ohio State, Boston College and UCF.
"This is a great weekend for our team, as we will have most of our girls competing in two different events," stated Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "We will have the opportunity to test ourselves against good opponents from around the country, so I have no doubt that we will be better players next week as a result of this weekend. In addition, it will help to prepare us for the following weekend's tournament in San Diego."
Liberty will send six players to compete at the Hokie Fall Invite, Friday through Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Rebekah Anderson, Lara Soares, Polina Miroshnickhenko, Eugenia Camacho, Grace Hashiguchi and Nasha Ghajar will represent the Lady Flames at the three-day tournament.
The Lady Flames last competed at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship (Oct. 13-15) at Virginia Tech. The Hokie Fall invite will feature: George Washington, Miami (Ohio), Penn State, Wofford, Radford, James Madison, VCU, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech and Liberty.
Liberty has enjoyed success in its fall campaign up to this point. The Lady Flames are 28-16 (.636) in singles competition and 13-10 (.565) in doubles bouts.
Medina paces the Lady Flames in singles with a 5-1 mark. The Cumana, Venezuela, native finished runner-up in the A2 singles draw in the Wake Forest Invitational (Oct. 6-8) and posted a 3-0 mark at the season-opening South Carolina Fall Invitational (Sept. 15-17).
Liberty's most formidable doubles duo so far has been Anderson and Bongart (4-2). Junior Evangeline Crist is 5-1 in doubles with three different partners. Both Anderson and Bongart and Crist and Anna Dollar reached the quarterfinals in doubles at the ITA Atlantic Regional.
