Liberty Finishes Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in 7th Place

The Flames wrapped up the fall portion of their 2017-18 season on Sunday with a seventh-place finish in the 2017 Steelwood Collegiate Invitational.

Liberty posted nearly the same team score during its three times around the Steelwood Country Club course (par 72, 7,096 yards), finishing the event with a 28-over par 892 (297-298-297). The event marked the fifth and final team tournament of Liberty's fall golf schedule.

Alabama, the No. 1 ranked team in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings, fended off a late charge from Kennesaw State.

The Crimson Tide posted a winning score of 2-over par 866 (280-293-293), claiming their third team title in four events this fall. The Owls, who captured the team title at this event in 2016, finished one shot off the lead with a 3-over par 867 (286-293-288).

UAB's R.J. Keur closed with the best round of the two-day event to capture individual medalist honors.

The No. 92 ranked golfer in the country posted a 5-under par 67 to finish with an overall winning score of 6-under par 210 (71-72-67). Four players finished two strokes back with a 4-under par 212.

Liberty's Gabe Lench (71-71-76) and Ervin Chang (74-73-71) led the Flames during the South Alabama hosted event with a 2-over par 218.

Lench was unable to replicate the success he had on Saturday, as he only had two birdies to offset six final round bogeys. The junior did lead the Flames during the event with 10 total birdies.

Chang closed the event with his team-leading eighth round at par or better this season thanks to finishing Sunday with a team-best five birdies.

Payton Taylor (75-77-80) and Isaiah Logue (80-77-75) finished the event tied for 47th place with a 16-over par 232. Mickey DeMorat finished tied for 52nd place with a 17-over par 233 (77-81-75).

The Flames will return to the golf course in February to begin the spring portion of their schedule. Liberty's first event of the spring schedule will be a return trip to the Sea Best Invitational, Feb. 5-6, at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
