Burton won two matches on Sunday to advance to Monday's quarterfinals at the ITA Atlantic Regional.
Liberty sophomore men's tennis player Chase Burton earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the singles main draw by winning two matches on day four of the ITA Atlantic Regional at the Cook Tennis Center.
A year after reaching the round of 16 at the regional, Burton is now among the final eight singles competitors left in the field.
"Chase set a great example for our team with the way he competed with discipline and solid energy today. Our team is fighting strong," said Flames head coach Derek Schwandt. "We are excited to support Chase tomorrow in the quarters."
Burton's first victory of the day came in comeback fashion over No. 14 seed Ammar Alhogbani of Virginia. The Liberty sophomore dropped the first set, 6-3, but wore the Cavaliers' Alhogbani down over the final two sets in winning, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The victory put him in the round of 16, where he faced ODU's Jannik Giesse. He defeated Giesse in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to claim a spot in tomorrow's quarterfinal round.
Burton will meet No. 7 seed Alexandre Ribiero of Virginia Tech on Monday morning at 9 a.m. The winner will earn a spot in the semifinals.
Liberty's Eddie Gutierrez fell in his round of 16 match to No. 2 seed Constant De La Basseteire, 6-4, 6-3.
Flames senior Diego Castano and sophomore Vince Salas both gritted out three-set victories in extra matches they competed in on Sunday. Castano topped Richmond's James Aronson, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Salas overcame a first-set loss to defeat Matthew Fernandez of Richmond, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Day five of the ITA Atlantic Regional will resume at 9 a.m., Monday morning at the Cook Tennis Center. The fifth day of competition will feature the semifinals and finals of doubles and the quarterfinals of singles. The six-day tournament will wrap up on Monday with semifinals of singles and finals of singles.
