The Liberty men's tennis squad posted a total of eight wins, against just two losses, Friday on day two of the ITA Atlantic Regional at the Cook Tennis Center.

The Flames claimed two of three round of 64 doubles matches in the morning, before posting a 6-1 combined mark in singles play in the late morning and afternoon.

"I'm very pleased to see the guys come through in so many tough matchups today," stated Liberty Men's Tennis Assistant Coach Egon Samaai. "We have been pushing hard in practices and workouts these past few weeks, so it's nice to see the reward."

The duo of Eddie Gutierrez and Vince Salas collected an 8-6 win over George Washington's Jabari Stafford and William Tutecky. Gutierrez and Salas led, 6-3, before the Colonials' duo took three of the next four games to cut the deficit to 7-6. The Liberty pairing closed out the match in the next game and will face ODU's third-seeded duo of Jacob Nicolussi and Michael Weindel, Saturday morning.

The Flames' other doubles triumph came later in the morning from Chase Burton and Sebastian Mermersky (8-6) against Penn State's Zachary Lieb and Gabriel Nemeth. The Liberty tandem will square off with Virginia Tech's Ryan Kros and Feliksas Sakalauskas, tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Salas picked up the first singles victory of the day, defeating Daniel Gutierrez of George Mason, 6-2, 6-2. The Angeles, Philippines, native will take on the No. 1 seed in the singles main draw, Old Dominion's Adam Moundir, on Saturday.

Burton followed up his teammate Salas' win with a convincing straight-sets victory over Morgan State's Arjun Ramakrishman, 6-0, 6-3. Tomorrow, the Liberty sophomore will meet Jakob Nielsen of the George Mason Patriots in the round of 64.

Gutierrez took down another George Mason opponent, besting Pally Ray, 6-4, 6-4, on court one. The Mexico native improved to 7-2 in singles, this fall, and will take on VCU's Javier Amantegui at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Mermersky defeated JMU's Damon Roberts in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, to move onto the round of 64, where he will face Virginia Tech's Sakalauskas, Saturday afternoon.

After fighting to get into the main draw by winning two matches yesterday, Flames junior Alex Poynter continued his run of success in the round of 128 with a three-set triumph over Richmond's James Aronson (6-1, 5-7, 6-4). Poynter will face the No. 9 seed, Nicolussi of ODU, on day three of competition.

In an open qualifying singles consolation bout, Liberty junior Max Borcuti earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against Luis Janko of Saint Joseph's.

Day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Cook Tennis Center. The third day of competition slate will feature the round of 32 doubles, round of 16 doubles and round of 64 singles.
