Poynter captured two matches to advance to the singles main draw.
Liberty men's tennis junior Alex Poynter qualified for the main draw singles by winning two matches, Thursday on day one of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship at the Cook Tennis Center.
The Flames junior topped Dan Tan of Saint Joseph's in his first match, Friday morning (6-2, 7-6 (2)). Poynter led the first set, 3-2, before winning the final three games to close out the set. Trailing 4-3 in the set two, Tan forced a tiebreaker at 6-6 with Poynter. Poynter dominated the tiebreaker, 7-2, to win the match.
The Houston, Texas native then earned a spot in the singles main draw with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph over the Richmond Spiders' Joe Nardini. The victory was Poynter's sixth in singles, this fall.
"I'm glad Alex got a couple of matches today to get some confidence under his belt," said Liberty Men's Tennis Assistant Coach Beck Pennington. "Hopefully he'll carry this momentum into the main draw tomorrow."
Liberty junior, Max Borcuti, dropped his match to Delaware's Laurenz Lankes, 6-2, 6-4.
Day two of the ITA Atlantic Regional will begin at 9 a.m., at the Cook Tennis Center. Friday's competition slate will feature the round of 64 doubles and round of 128 singles.
