The duo of Evangeline Crist and Anna Dollar won two matches at Saturday's ITA Atlantic Regional to advance to the quarterfinals.
Day 2 Results
Two Liberty women's doubles teams posted a combined mark of 4-0 on day two of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, advancing to the quarterfinals by knocking off top-10 opponents.
Liberty's duos of senior Evangeline Crist and junior Anna Dollar and juniors Rebekah Anderson and Ashley Bongart made program history on Saturday marking the first time two Liberty pairings have advanced to the quarterfinals at the regional in Liberty women's tennis history.
Overall, the Lady Flames posted a combined 7-1 mark in doubles and singles action on day two.
"This was an incredible day for our girls. They played with composure and executed precisely in all eight matches today," said Liberty Women's Tennis Head Coach Jeff Maren. "I couldn't be more proud of their efforts."
Crist and Dollar first took down Old Dominion's duo of Adriana Rajkovic and Louie McLelland convincingly, 8-1, in their 9 a.m. match.
Later in the morning the Lady Flames' pairing, the No. 15 seed entering the tournament, bested host Virginia Tech's third-seeded duo of Caroline Daxhelet and Natalie Novotna, 8-6. Crist and Dollar reached the semifinals of the doubles draw at the 2016 ITA Atlantic Regional, the furthest a Liberty duo has gone in program history. That run also included an upset of a third-ranked doubles team, Maryland's Ekaterina Tour and Arnelle Sullivan (Oct. 16, 2016).
Crist and Dollar and will square off with Maryland's No. 11 seeded duo of Arnelle Sullivan and Millie Stretton in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 9 a.m.
"I'm super happy with the girls' performances all-around. Everyone stepped it up and seemed more confident than ever," Crist stated. "Beating big name schools gives us an even higher platform to represent our school and ultimately, Christ."
Anderson and Bongart also won two matches on the second day of competition, including an upset of No. 9 seed freshmen pairing of Ines Milosevic and Gabby O'Gorman of Penn State, 8-3.
The Liberty tandem then prevailed in its second tiebreaker in as many days, 8-7 (4), over ODU's Victoria Olivarez and Natalia Vlasova. They are 3-0, so far this weekend, and will square off with No. 2 Ekaterina Tour and Eva Alexandrova, tomorrow morning.
The Lady Flames won three of their four singles matches on Saturday afternoon at Virginia Tech.
Crist exhibited her grit in singles, erasing a one-set deficit and 5-2 deficit in the second set to Duquesne's Julianne Herman. The Liberty senior captain won five straight games in the second set to take the set, 7-5, and then rolled to a 6-0 victory in set three and a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory. She will face the Virginia Tech Hokies' Novotna in the round of 32, Sunday.
Crist's victory on Saturday marked the 70th singles win of her Liberty career. With the triumph, she moved into second place all-time in program history for career singles victories.
Bongart triumphed in a three-hour marathon against Navy's Amanda Keller, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. She will meet Virginia Tech's Daxhelet in the round of 32 on Sunday.
Anderson won an extra match, 6-3, 6-3, against Richmond's Lea Owens.
Dollar proved to be a challenge to No. 3 seed Holly Hutchinson of ODU before falling, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Sunday's action on day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships will commence at 9 a.m. with the doubles quarterfinal round. Day three will also feature the round of 32 and 16 singles.
