Gabrielle Vess totaled a match-high 15 kills and 14 digs, Saturday against Charleston Southern.
Liberty closed out the first half of its Big South schedule with a resounding, 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-17, 25-23) over Charleston Southern, Saturday at the Vines Center.
With the win, its first 3-0 victory of the season, Liberty (7-14, 4-4 Big South) snaps a three-match winless streak. Charleston Southern falls to 8-14, including 3-5 in Big South play.
Liberty hit a season-high .292 on the afternoon, also holding the Buccaneers to a .138 hitting percentage. The Lady Flames led in kills (52-33) and digs (58-41), while CSU led 6-1 in aces and 8-4 in blocks.
Gabrielle Vess sent down a match-high 15 kills, adding 14 digs for her second double-double in a row. Anna Gragg scored 12 kills at a .455 pace, while Casey Goodwin contributed 11 kills. Amaya Williams dished out a match-high 40 assists, while Margaret Latchford's 19 digs led all players.
Brooke Monssen led CSU with 10 kills while also posting five blocks. Kalysia Bates recorded a match-high six blocks, while Rachel Smith totaled 29 assists and two service aces. Madison Martin collected 13 digs.
Liberty stormed out of the gates in set one, leading 8-2 after 10 serves. Gragg's sixth kill set Liberty's advantage at 19-12. The Lady Flames led, 24-14, before CSU reeled off five straight points, including two service aces by Macey LaPorte. However, Vess clinched the set, 25-19, with a kill.
The opening set saw Liberty outhit CSU, .333-.184, as the hosts scored 19 kills. Gragg scored six set-one kills, while Vess sent down five kills.
CSU raced out to a 13-7 lead in set two. However, Vess scored four kills during an 8-1 rally, giving Liberty the lead at 15-14. The Buccaneers tied it at 16-16, but Goodwin scored three late kills to help Liberty pull away, 25-17. In total, the Lady Flames outscored CSU, 18-4, over the final 22 serves of the second set.
Liberty hit .306 during set two, compared to .116 for the Buccaneers.
During set three, Liberty trailed, 11-8, before staging a 10-2 rally to go ahead, 18-13. CSU battled back from a 21-16 deficit, as Hannah Western sparked a 4-0 Buccaneer rally with back-to-back kills. A pair of Goodwin kills made it 23-20, Liberty. The visitors drew to within one, but Goodwin's two late kills sealed the set, 25-23, and secured the sweep.
The Lady Flames outhit the Buccaneers, .238-.114, in the final session. Vess sent down six set-three kills, while Goodwin scored five kills.
The Lady Flames will play the same two teams they faced this weekend, next weekend on the road. Liberty will play at Winthrop on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Charleston Southern at CSU Field House, Saturday at 3 p.m.
