Bye Week Update with Defensive Coordinator Robert Wimberly

LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to visit with Flames Defensive Coordinator Robert Wimberly during Liberty's annual bye week, recapping the first half of the season.

Liberty is coming off its best defensive performance of the season, limiting St. Francis (Pa.) to 275 total offensive yards and 13 points, last weekend. During the first four games of the season, Liberty was allowing 440.0 total offensive yards per game and 33.5 points per contest

Liberty has allowed two of its first four opponents to amass 500 or more total offensive yards in 2017 (Baylor – 532; Morehead State – 300; Indiana State – 543). During the Flames' first five seasons under head coach Turner Gill, Liberty allowed a total of six opponents to finish with 500 or more total offensive yards (48 games over five seasons).

Despite St. Francis (Pa.) finishing with Liberty's highest third-down conversion rate of the season (5-of-18), the Flames continue to be tough on third downs and would rank No. 8 in the country in third-down conversion defense (27.8/20-of-72) if the Flames were eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings.
