The Liberty men's tennis squad will play in its second fall tournament of 2017 at the San Diego State Aztec Fall Invitational, Friday through Sunday.
The invitational will be contested at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. Tournament draws will be posted on LibertyFlames.com once they become available. The seven-team tournament features Liberty, host SDSU, University of San Diego, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UCLA and Grand Canyon.
"Our guys have been practicing hard on the court and in the gym, and we are excited to go compete at SDSU," stated Liberty head coach Derek Schwandt. "Two areas of focus for our guys will be problem solving and responding to challenges."
Results from the invitational, as well as a recap, will be available at the conclusion of each day on LibertyFlames.com.
The Flames got off to a strong start to the 2017-18 season in head coach Derek Schwandt's head coaching debut at the Liberty University Invitational, Sept. 22-24 at the Cook Tennis Center. Liberty won 20 total matches (15 singles, five doubles) over the course of the three-day invitational.
Senior Diego Castano and Alex Poynter posted a flawless 3-0 mark to capture the White doubles title. In singles play, junior Eddie Gutierrez and freshman Sebastian Mermersky each posted 3-1 marks.
Four Liberty players won two matches at the invitational: Max Borcuti, Chase Burton, Vince Salas and Diego Castano.
Castano recorded his 50th career singles victory on Sept. 22, a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Richmond's Joe Nardini. Castano is one of nine Flames to record 50 or more career singles wins. With 51 victories, the Statesville, N.C., native is currently eighth in program history in the category.
