Just days before the beginning of the 2017-18 Liberty swimming & diving season, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to interview eighth-year Head Coach Jake Shellenberger.
The Lady Flames will open their season at Campbell this Saturday. Liberty has finished as CCSA runner-up each of the last three seasons, and five times in program history, winning its first CCSA championship in 2014.
The team returns 16 scorers from the 2017 CCSA meet, including individual-event champions Alicia Finnigan (200 fly) and Brittany Weiss (100 back). Finnigan earned a spot at the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, while Weiss was named Most Outstanding Freshman Swimmer at the 2017 CCSA Championships. Finnigan and Prudence Rooker both medaled in three separate events at last year's conference meet.
With the opening of the Liberty Natatorium on the horizon, Liberty will have a large contingent of seven divers, including five newcomers and returning athletes Jenna Joyal and Taylor Lynch.
The Lady Flames will contest their first meet at the state-of-the-art Liberty Natatorium on Dec. 1-2, with the Grand Opening set for Jan. 26-27. The Liberty Natatorium will house an Olympic-sized pool with a separate diving well, along with seating for 1,400 spectators in a wraparound setting. The facility will feature the newest and best technology.
