Stephen Calvert was named Big South and STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Flames to a 48-45 win over Baylor.
After helping the Flames to one of the most significant wins in program history, Liberty quarterback Stephen Calvert and kicker Alex Probert were honored earlier today for their season-opening efforts.
Calvert was named the Big South and STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week. Probert was named the Big South Special Teams Player of the Week and an honorable-mention selection for the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
Calvert and Probert played a large part in Liberty upending Big 12 member Baylor, 48-45, on Saturday night at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. The win was Liberty's first over a Power 5 opponent and the program's fifth over a FBS program in school history.
Calvert helped Liberty's offense rack up 585 total offensive yards on 103 plays, averaging 5.7 yards per play. The Flames also controlled the clock by finishing with a 38:16 to 21:44 time of possession advantage.
The sophomore quarterback set new Liberty and Big South single-game records for passing yards (447), competitions (44) and attempts (60). He threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another, an eight-yard run in the fourth quarter to account for his first career rushing touchdown.
Probert matched Liberty's field goals in a game record, connecting on a career-high four field goals against the Bears (27, 31, 33 and 44 yards). The sophomore also was a perfect 4-of-4 on extra points and had 7-of-10 kickoffs result in touchbacks. Three of his four field goals gave the Flames a three-point lead during the back-and-fourth battle.
Calvert, Probert and the rest of the Flames will open the home portion of their 2017 schedule on Saturday when they host Morehead State. Kickoff from Williams Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
