As Liberty Flames student-athletes have returned to campus, they have begun to serve the community of Lynchburg and its surrounding area.

Throughout the 2017-18 academic year, Liberty student-athletes will serve the Lynchburg community and surrounding area under the initiative of #FlamesGiveBack. Last year, Liberty student-athletes logged more than 13,000 hours of community service.

Liberty Academic & Student-Athlete Development Coordinator Jordan Bartlett has begun coordinating community outreach events for the 2017-18 academic year. Last Saturday, the Liberty women's soccer program participated in Food for Families Day at Park View Community Mission in downtown Lynchburg.

"It was amazing to see the loving impact and smiles we were able to leave on the people there just by helping give back in a small way and demonstrating our purpose as a team," said redshirt freshman Kayleigh Kardos.

Bartlett, along with the Academic Affairs for Athletics staff, are now coordinating efforts for the Dollar Makes a Difference Campaign, which runs through Sept. 11. In 2016, Liberty Athletics teams raised a new record amount for the campaign.

The money raised will be used to purchase school supplies for local children in the area such as folders, backpacks, pens, crayons, markers, glue sticks and notebooks. These supplies will be distributed between Sept. 12-15 throughout the Lynchburg City Schools as well as schools in Roanoke City, Amherst County and Campbell County districts.

Other community service initiatives for the month of September for Liberty Flames student-athletes include:
      • Chocolate Bingo at Runk & Pratt (Sept. 6 & 20)
      • Food for Families Day at Park View Community Mission (Sept. 9 & 30)
      • The Amazing Mile Kids Fun Run at Amazement Square (Sept. 22)
      • The Virginia 10 Miler (Sept. 23) in downtown Lynchburg (Sept. 23)
