Men's Soccer to Host VMI, Tuesday

WEEK ONE MEN'S SOCCER NOTES

The Liberty Flames will host the VMI Keydets for a men's soccer match, Tuesday at Osborne Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Liberty (1-0-0) and VMI (0-0-1), former member of the Big South Conference, will be meeting for the 14th consecutive season and the 25th time, Tuesday. The Flames have won the last three meetings between the two teams, including a 5-2 victory over the Keydets in Lexington, Va., last season. Tuesday's contest will be broadcast by LFSN, starting at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Jeff Alder's team opened the 2017 with a 7-0 victory over Southern Virginia at Osborne Stadium, Friday. 2016 Big South Player of the Year and first team all-conference forward Tresor Mbuyu scored twice and assisted on another goal in the contest, while 2016 All-Big South midfielder Kevin Mendoza also netted two goals. Newcomers Bobby Bynum, Evan Godfrey and Matthew Zacyzk each netted their first goal in a Liberty uniform in the contest.

The Flames played all three goalkeepers on their roster during the shutout. James Knoebel played the first 45 minutes, while freshmen Brogan Engbers and Parker Andres manned the Liberty net in the second half.

Notables
• The Flames were tabbed to finish third in the 2017 Big South Preseason Poll. 
• Liberty junior forward Tresor Mbuyu has been selected as the 2017 Big South Men's Soccer Preseason Attacking Player of the Year.
• Head Coach Jeff Alder is in his 17th season at Liberty. Alder has led his alma mater to 152-120-26.
• The Flames return 10 of their starting 11 and welcome back 12 players who played in 10 or more contests, last season.
• Liberty's roster features 13 newcomers - eight freshmen and five transfers.
• This season, the Flames will have members from seven different countries on their roster.  Liberty players hail from Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, England, Mexico, Spain and the United States. In addition, several Liberty players lived in Africa, before calling the U.S. home.
• Juniors Nico Bellarde and Kevin Mendoza will serve as captains for the Flames in 2016 season.
• Mbuyu lead the Big South with 29 points and 10 goals last season. Mendoza also was among the conference leaders. The midfielder finished the year fifth with 16 points and seventh with six goals.
• Senior defender Alex Dominguez recorded his first point since 2013, Friday. The defender assisted on goal by Mbuyu in Liberty's contest against Southern Virginia.
