Liberty Selected to Finish 2nd in 2017 BIG EAST FH Preseason Poll

The 2017 Liberty Lady Flames field hockey squad was voted to finish second in the BIG EAST Conference.

The 2017 Liberty Lady Flames field hockey squad was voted to finish second in the BIG EAST Conference.

A year after finishing as the runner-up in its inaugural season in the BIG EAST Conference, the Liberty field hockey team has been selected to finish second place in the 2017 BIG EAST Field Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Liberty received one first-place vote and 41 points, trailing only UConn, who merited seven first-place votes and 49 points. Old Dominion was picked third (35 points), followed by Providence (33 points), Temple (25 points), Quinnipiac (19 points), Villanova (15 points) and Georgetown (7 points). The Lady Flames were also picked to place second in the conference, last year.

Liberty sophomore Agueda Moroni and junior Abby Julius garnered individual recognition by being selected to the preseason All-BIG EAST team.

Moroni, a midfielder, led the conference in goals in 2016 with eight and was tabbed to the All-BIG EAST first team. The Cordoba, Argentina, native also garnered BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week selections on two occasions.

She closed out last season by being named to the 2016 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship All-Tournament team. Moroni was also recognized for her work in the classroom, as she earned inclusion on the BIG EAST All-Academic team.

Julius, a midfielder, was a second team All-BIG EAST selection in 2016. She tallied five goals, four assists and 14 points in seven BIG EAST regular-season contests as a sophomore.

Connecticut swept the top two honors in the preseason awards. Senior forward Charlotte Veitner was voted BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while senior defender Casey Umstead was tabbed the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.      The Lady Flames open regular season competition on Aug. 26 against James Madison in Lynchburg and play their first BIG EAST contest at home versus Villanova on Sept. 16. Liberty will play seven regular season conference matches before the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship from Nov. 3-5, hosted by Providence
