Following Liberty's second full workout of the week, Liberty Head Football Coach Turner Gill met with the local media on Tuesday to provide a progress update three weeks into training camp.
To open his Tuesday media session, Gill praised the effort the Flames' defense gave during the team's scrimmage on Saturday. After giving up six touchdowns during Liberty's first scrimmage of training camp (Aug. 5), the unit only allowed three touchdowns, last Saturday afternoon.
Liberty's defenders also held their offensive counterparts to a 27 percent third-down conversation rate, marking another area of improvement for the Flames' defense.
With training camp coming to a close at the end of next week, Gill and his staff are paying close attention to the play of some of their newest and younger players. Gill noted the strong play of defensive lineman Jayod Sanders, linebacker David King and offensive lineman Thomas Sargeant.
The Flames will have their last weekday practice in full pads tomorrow morning, before holding lighter workouts on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, Liberty will have its final closed scrimmage before opening the gates at Williams Stadium for their annual Flames Fan Fest event on Aug. 26.
