2017 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar team
Liberty men's golfer Mickey DeMorat was one of a record-setting number of honorees named to the 2017 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar listing.
The Golf Coaches Association for America has announced the 2017 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar listing. The team featured 434 members, including 260 from Division I programs, 108 from Division II, 46 from Division III and 20 from NAIA schools.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must meet the following criteria: be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade point average (GPA) of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
DeMorat is the 12th golfer in program history to be named to the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar listing and the first since 2015 (Mathieu Fenasse).
DeMorat finished his junior year at Liberty with a cumulative GPA of 3.35. The native of Merritt Island, Fla. is pursuing a degree in sport management.
The national academic honor adds to an already stellar season for the junior. During the 2016-17 season, DeMorat's accolades include: All-Big South first team, Big South All-Academic team, Big South All-Championship team, VaSID All-State second team and VGSCA All-State second team.
DeMorat finished second on Liberty's roster with a 71.81 season stroke average, which ranks fourth best in program history. He missed the first half of Liberty's spring season due to an injury, but still managed to finish tied for third on the team with four top-10 finishes and tied for second with a pair of top-five showings.
Liberty finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 49 in the final Golfstat national rankings, spending each week of the season in the top-50 national rankings. The Flames spotlighted the run with a No. 22 ranking on Oct. 22.
Following a second-place finish at the 2017 Big South Men's Golf Championship, the Flames earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Regional. Liberty was the No. 8 seed at the NCAA Austin Regional, which was contested at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 71, 7,355 yards) in Austin, Texas, May 15-17.
