2017 Liberty Volleyball Schedule The first home match against a Big Ten opponent in program history, along with a tournament at ACC foe Virginia, highlight Liberty's 2017 volleyball schedule, released today by 14th-year Head Coach Shane Pinder.
The Lady Flames will compete in regular-season invitationals on the first four weekends of the campaign. Liberty will appear in tournaments at Virginia, Air Force and UNCW, in addition to hosting the Liberty Invitational. This season's schedule features one opponent (High Point) which appeared in the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. High Point, Hofstra and Radford all won 20 or more matches last year.
Liberty is scheduled to play 11 regular-season home matches. For the second year in a row, Liberty will play twice against each league opponent, for a 16-match conference schedule. Regular-season play will be of much importance again this year, as only the top six teams qualify for the 2017 Big South Volleyball Championship.
The campaign begins at the Cavalier Classic, hosted by Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The Lady Flames open their season on Aug. 25 at 4 p.m., taking on Villanova. While in Charlottesville, Liberty will also face the host Cavaliers along with Hofstra.
September begins with the Liberty Invitational, held Sept. 1-2 at the Vines Center. Liberty will open its home schedule against Maryland, the first Big Ten volleyball team to compete in Lynchburg. The second day will see Liberty square off against Furman and Elon.
Liberty then makes its first-ever trip to Colorado, competing in a tournament at Air Force, Sept. 8-9. The matches are to be determined, although the Lady Flames will take on Air Force and Southern Utah.
Upon returning from Colorado, Liberty hosts VCU on Sept. 12.
The Lady Flames then head to Wilmington, N.C., to participate at an invitational hosted by UNCW, Sept. 15-16. Liberty will meet the host Seahawks, along with Morgan State and Western Michigan.
Liberty starts Big South play with three straight home matches, beginning on Sept. 19 against defending Big South tournament champion High Point. The Lady Flames then host Presbyterian and UNC Asheville on back-to-back Saturdays to end September.
A three-match road swing greets Liberty to start October, as the team plays at defending Big South regular-season champion Radford (Oct. 3), Campbell (Oct. 6) and High Point (Oct. 10).
Winthrop and Charleston Southern visit the Vines Center, Oct. 13-14, while Liberty turns around and plays at Winthrop and Charleston Southern the following weekend.
A quick three-match homestand brings the home slate to a close, as Liberty hosts Gardner-Webb (Oct. 27), Campbell (Oct. 28) and Radford (Oct. 31).
Liberty wraps up the regular season with matches at Presbyterian (Nov. 3), UNC Asheville (Nov. 9) and Gardner-Webb (Nov. 11).
The 2017 Big South Volleyball Championship will be held at the Dedmon Center on the campus of Radford, Nov. 17-19, as the Highlanders will host the conference tournament for the first time since 2009. The winner of the conference tournament receives the Big South's automatic qualifying bid to the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.
The 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship is scheduled to begin on Nov. 30.
