Nick Pierce of the Liberty Flames Sports Network recently caught up with Liberty Men's and Women's Track & Field Head Coach Brant Tolsma to recap last week's NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet in Lexington, Ky.
Sophomore Azaria Kirwa provided the Flames' biggest highlight of the meet, qualifying to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the men's 5K.
Redshirt freshman Jovaine Atkinson clocked a program-record time of 13.93 seconds, advancing to the quarterfinal round in the men's 110 hurdles.
The Flames narrowly missed sending more athletes to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Kirwa placed 13th in the men's 10K, missing qualification by one position. Meanwhile, sophomore Denzel Pratt and redshirt freshman Samuel Arter finished 16th and 19th, respectively, in the men's javelin. Junior Brenna Smith was 17th in the women's javelin.
Kirwa will race in the NCAA men's 5K final on June 9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The race is scheduled for 10:25 p.m. Eastern and will be televised live on ESPN.
