NCAA Austin Regional Notes

No. 8 seed Liberty will be seeking its second trip to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship in program history when it competes at NCAA Austin Regional.

The three-day, 54-hole event will be contested at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 71, 7,355 yards), home of the Texas Longhorns' men's and women's golf programs. A practice round will be held on Sunday with the tournament getting underway on Monday morning.

The Flames, who are currently ranked No. 46 in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings, earned an at-large selection into one of the six NCAA Regional fields. The at-large selection was the fourth in program history and the first since 2013 (2003, 2006, 2013 and 2017).

The men's golf program is one of only two teams at Liberty to earn an at-large selection into an NCAA Division I postseason championship. Baseball earned it's first-ever NCAA Regional at-large berth in 2014.

The top five teams at each of the six NCAA Regional sites will advance to the 2017 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., May 26-31.

Liberty is one of nine at-large selections in the 14-team NCAA Austin Regional field, a field that includes No. 3 Oklahoma State (No. 1 seed), No. 10 Wake Forest (No. 2 seed), No. 16 Texas (No. 3 seed) and No. 22 Ole Miss (No. 4 seed).

Liberty's men's golf program has competed at the University of Texas Golf Club, when the Flames finished in sixth place out of 12 teams at the Morris Williams Invitational, April 13-14, 2013. The Flames carded an 11-over par 863 (295-274-294), led by Niklas Lindstrom finishing tied for fourth place with a 4-under par 209 (74-65-70).

Four of Liberty's starting five golfers at the Austin Regional have previous NCAA Regional experience, led by Isaiah Logue. The junior, who ranks second on Liberty's roster with a 71.84 season stroke average, was an individual at the 2015 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional and was one of five starters for the Flames at the 2016 NCAA Albuquerque Regional.

Gabe Lench paced the way for the Flames at the challenging NCAA Albuquerque Regional, last year, battling three days of windy playing conditions to finish tied for 17th place with a 10-over par 226 (71-82-73). The sophomore ranks fourth on Liberty's roster this season with a 72.16 season stroke average.

Mickey DeMorat enters next week's regional as the Flames' leading golfer on the season with a 71.30 stroke average. The junior set a program record with a 71.0 stroke average during the fall, but missed the first four team events of the spring with an injury.

Payton Taylor ranks fifth on Liberty's roster with a 74.10 season stroke average. The junior is coming off a 10th-place finish at the Big South Men's Golf Championship where he carded a 1-under par 215 (69-70-76), his lowest 54-hole total of the season.

Kieran Vincent, the lone newcomer to regional play for the Flames, was named the Big South Men's Golf Freshman of the Year after carding an 8-under par 208 (72-71-65) at the Big South Men's Golf Championship. The rookie enters his first collegiate postseason event ranked third on Liberty's roster with a 72.11 season stroke average.
