Liberty earned its fourth at-large selection in program history on Thursday when it was announced the Flames will be the No. 8 seed at the NCAA Austin Regional in Austin, Texas.
Regional play for the Flames will be held on May 15-7 at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas (par 71, 7,412 yards). Liberty will be making the program's sixth appearance at an NCAA Regional in the last seven seasons.
The top five teams in the 14-team NCAA Austin Regional will advance to the 2017 NCAA Men's Golf Championship in Sugar Grove, Ill., May 26-31.
The NCAA Austin Regional field includes five conference champions who were automatic qualifiers into this field: No. 3 seed Texas (Big 12 Conference), No. 11 seed College of Charleston (CAA), No. 12 seed McNeese State (Southland), No. 13 seed Wichita State (Missouri Valley) and No. 14 seed Saint Peter's (MAAC).
No. 1 seed Oklahoma State leads the field at the Austin Regional, as the Cowboys are currently ranked No. 3 in the latest Golfstat national rankings.
Oklahoma State is followed in the rankings by No. 2 seed Wake Forest (No. 10 nationally), No. 3 seed Texas (No. 16 nationally), No. 4 seed Ole Miss (No. 22 nationally) and No. 5 seed Arizona State (No. 26 nationally). Liberty enters the event ranked No. 46 in the country.
The University of Texas Golf Club is located at Steiner Ranch in the Hill Country of northwest Austin and is the home of the Texas men's and women's golf teams. Built in the Texas Hill Country in 2003, the course overlooks Lake Austin and borders the Balcones Natual Wildlife Preserve, offering challenging shots and views that rival the best in Austin.
Liberty is one of two Big South teams who will be playing at a 2017 NCAA Regional, Big South champion Campbell is the No. 11 seed at the West Lafayette Regional, which will be contested on the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
Liberty, winners of the Big South title four out of the last seven years, will be making its eighth NCAA Regional appearance in program history.
As Big South Conference champions, the Flames received automatic bids to the NCAA Regionals in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
The men's golf program is one of only two programs at Liberty to earn an at-large selection to the NCAA postseason event, joining the baseball team who was an at-large team in 2014. The men's golf program has received at-large bids to the NCAA Regionals in 2003, 2006, 2013 and 2017.
Liberty will try to advance to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship for the second time in program history. The Flames won the 2012 NCAA Greensboro Regional and finished in 10th place at the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship at the historic Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
