Following the 2017 FLAMESPY Award show, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to talk with several of the award winners, including Male Rookie of the Year Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz.
Pacheco-Ortiz made an immediate impact during his rookie season and was recognized for his efforts when he was named to the Big South Conference All-Freshman team.
The native of Ponce, Puerto Rico finished his freshman season averaging 8.6 points per game and 3.1 rebounds per game. He led the team in total minutes played (1,086) and ranked second on the squad in minutes played per game (31.0). He also led the Big South in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4).
The freshman was also one of three Flames to shoot 80.0 percent or better from the free throw line (81.6/71-of-87), while shooting 40.0 or better from the field (41.7/95-of-228) and three-point range (40.0/40-of-100).
The Flames finished the 2016-17 season with a 21-14 overall record and set a program record with 14 Big South wins. The Flames made a return trip to the CIT this season, advancing to the quarterfinals following wins over Norfolk State and Samford.
