Following the 2017 FLAMESPY Award show, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to talk with several of the award winners, including Breakthrough Athlete of the Year Brianna McCaffrey.
McCaffrey has more than doubled her point production during the 2017 season after opening her career at Liberty with 16 points as a freshman in 2016 (13 goals, three assists).
With regular season play already in the books, the sophomore ranks second on the team with 40 points, having recorded 31 goals and nine assists. The native of Boca Raton, Fla. ranks No. 5 in the Big South and No. 37 in the country with 75 draw controls (4.41 per game).
McCaffrey's efforts on the field have helped the Lady Flames rank No. 4 in the country in ground balls (23.47 per game) and No. 5 in caused turnovers (12.29 per game). McCaffrey ranks second on the team in caused turnovers (24) and third in ground balls (35).
McCaffrey and the Lady Flames are the No. 4 seed in this year's Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship. Liberty hosts No. 5 seed Longwood in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at the Liberty Lacrosse Field (Noon) with the victor advancing to face No. 1 seed High Point in a semifinal game on May 5. Earlier today, McCaffrey was named to the All-Big South honorable mention team.
