Following the 2017 FLAMESPY Award show, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to talk with several of the award winners, including Coach of the Year winner Jake Shellenberger.
Jake Shellenberger, the Liberty swimming & diving coach since starting the program for the 2010-11 season, led the Lady Flames to their fifth CCSA runner-up finish in the last six seasons. He guided Liberty to a 10-2 dual meet record during the 2016-17 season, the program's fourth campaign with 10 or more victories.
Under Shellenberger's coaching, sophomore Alicia Finnigan advance to the 2017 NCAA Swimming & Diving Champions. She became the fourth swimmer in program history to qualify for the national championship, competing at the event in the 100 and 200 fly.
Next year, Shellenberger will help usher the program into a new era, when Liberty finishes construction on the brand-new, state-of-the-art Liberty Natatorium opens. Located beneath the LU monogram at the base of the mountain, the facility features a nine-lane, 50-meter pool with a movable bulkhead. A separate 17-foot-deep diving well includes 1- and 3-meter springboards and a three-column tower, featuring 1, 3, 5, 7.5 and 10-meter platforms.
